You Make The Blog

(NOTE: Based on time elapsed since the posting of this entry, the BS-o-meter calculates this is 14.472% likely to be something that Ferrett now regrets.)

I have many pressing issues of the day, including:

  • Why the traditional libertarian alternative of “Just shop someplace else!” fails when businesses start to discriminate;
  • Religious expression and feminism, based on a particularly irritating essay posted the other day;
  • The potential origins of an artificial “I feel”.
  • The limits of sexual consent.

But I have to get to work on a big refactor for my day job today, so hey.  Vote which one you’d like to see on Monday, and I’ll make it happen.  Or suggest another topic, and maybe I’ll write about that!
So tired.

    How to deal with the envy of a friend in crisis receiving a whole internets of support when you in a similar circumstance could barely get a soul to comment, nonetheless offer to help.

      That’s not an essay, but a personal reply.
      The friend in crisis did things differently: first off, she’s got a much larger audience. Secondly, she’s never friends-locked her posts, and in fact has flooded the internet with information, whereas you’ve tended to lock everything down behind tight walls. Third, when comments are left she has a much higher response rate, or at least tends to interact with her audience more.
      Her downside for that is probably a ton more drama, since people are inevitably judging her in various locales. But she lives her life in a much more public way, sharing information far beyond her immediate circle, which means she has many more people to offer support when the crash comes. I’m sorry you felt like you didn’t get internets of support, as that sucks, but my response would be that you’ve chosen to handle it a different way, and get different bonuses. You don’t get the tons of support, but you also don’t have tons of strangers picking apart your life’s choices. You can make that choice differently; you just have to weigh what you want.

        It pretty much has to do with the “How do I deal with feeling like such a petty and vile bitch”, because yes, there is a huge difference in how life got handled? It isn’t at all “why didn’t I get this too?” because yes, my life is much more private…but more, dealing with the irrational feelings of envy that, to me, are totally inappropriate.

    Continued from elsewhere –
    Yes, of course, you’re right about the racist and anti-woman parts, and I didn’t intend for them to be the source of all wisdom, more over the general government. I mean, for example, that central government was supposed to be small, without parties, and non-invasive. Instead we have a Big Brother setup minus the telescreens (so far as we know.) The government has or is attempting to have its hand in pretty much everything, et cetera.
    As I said, I know where I stand on the idea. I asked a friend a few weeks back (he’s sort of a conspiracy theorist sort; not hardcore tin-foil hat, but maybe halfway there) if he believed this country ever had a chance to be great, or if the government was doomed to be corrupt from the start, including some or all of the founding fathers. I’m sure you can guess the answer I was hoping for and which he gave.
    I don’t know, I can’t tell if I’m looking for hope or despair. But an intelligent perspective of someone who was born and raised here with (to my knowledge) no family influence of other cultures is of interest to me. My own family being chiefly English prior to this generation gives me a different perspective, I think.
